The Igbo Speaking Community in Lagos State has adopted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office, declaring that it will mobilise its members to support his re-election and the candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election.
President of the community, Chief Sunday Udeh, announced the decision while addressing journalists at an event on Victoria Island, Lagos.
Udeh said the endorsement was informed, among other considerations, by the advice and positions of prominent Igbo political leaders, including Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi; Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma; and Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo.
“When such people speak, I think there is every need to listen to them, considering their political status,” Udeh said.
He said the Igbo community also considered Tinubu’s record on political inclusion and his alleged antecedents in accommodating people from different parts of the country.
According to him, “President Tinubu was the first governor in Nigeria outside Igboland to appoint an Igbo man as a commissioner when it looked impossible. That shows his commitment to inclusion.”
Udeh argued that another four-year tenure for Tinubu would provide greater stability and continuity for the country, rather than changing the administration and embarking on what he described as “trial and error.”
“I believe another four years will pay Nigeria more if Asiwaju is given a second term instead of using it for trial and error,” he said.
He also cited what he described as Tinubu’s antecedent on regionalisation as another reason for the endorsement, saying the implementation of such policies could contribute to Nigeria’s development.
The organisation’s president further commended the President’s relationship with state governors, claiming that Tinubu had devolved more powers and resources to the states than previous administrations.
“Tinubu has done well. He took the government to the people by empowering the state governors more than any executive government ever existed in Nigeria,” he said.
Udeh said the Igbo community was determined to ensure that the voting pattern among Igbo residents in Lagos in 2027 would be different from what obtained in the 2023 presidential election.
“2023 will not repeat itself. This time, we will do a thorough sensitisation of our people in order to vote not just President Tinubu but all APC candidates,” he declared.
He said the Igbo Speaking Community would commence sensitisation and mobilisation of its members across Lagos State ahead of the 2027 elections.
