People of Ogoni ethnic nationality in Rivers State have honoured their son, Vincent Idemyor, for being awarded the 2023 American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), for his research and innovative works in pharmacy.
“Idemyor has made sustained contributions to international pharmacy practice, especially in improving outcomes for patients with HIV/AIDS,” ASHP said.
Ogoni trooped en masse in Port Harcourt to celebrate Idemyor for the award, which had earlier been presented to him at an ASHP meeting in Anaheim, California.
They described him as a worthy son and accomplished pharmacist who remains committed to improving human health.
Addressing newsmen in Port Harcourt, Executive Chairman of the Council of Ogoni Professionals (COP), International, USA, Anslem Dornubari John-Miller, said Idemyor was an authority in HIV/AIDS, and on the role science plays in the advancement of medical treatment.
John-Miller also commended the leadership of University of Port Harcourt, for also celebrating Idemyor, who has been a John D. and Catherine Mac-Arthur Foundation visiting senior fellow, at the University of Port Harcourt since 2009.
“The Frankie Medal is given to individuals for significant international contributions to advance pharmacy practice. Idemyor has done extensive work for the past 15 years in Nigeria. Prior to that, he worked for 20 years at the major hospitals/academic institutions in Chicago, Illinois. He is an authority on HIV/AIDS, and on the role science plays in the advancement of medical treatment.”
Idemyor’s work includes being instrumental in starting a faculty of pharmaceutical sciences in the University of Port Harcourt, as well as being engaged by the United Nations Development Programme in 2006, to evaluate providers of nationwide programmes in Nigeria that delivered services related to HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
