Nigeria’s 400m sensation, Samuel Ogazi, has officially turned professional, ending a record-breaking collegiate career at the University of Alabama after establishing himself as one of the greatest quarter-milers in NCAA history.
The 20-year-old, who celebrated his birthday last month, has opted to forgo his remaining NCAA eligibility following three outstanding seasons in the United States according to Athletic Station Management.
His decision comes after a sensational 2026 campaign that saw him rewrite NCAA and Nigerian records while cementing his place among the fastest 400m runners in history.
Ogazi capped his collegiate career in spectacular fashion by winning the NCAA Outdoor Championship in a record-breaking 43.38 seconds, setting a new NCAA record and becoming the fourth-fastest man ever over the distance.
Earlier in the season, he captured the NCAA Indoor 400m title in an African indoor record of 44.57 seconds, making him the fourth-fastest indoor performer in history at the time. He also completed a clean sweep of the SEC indoor and outdoor 400m titles after successfully defending his outdoor crown.
His impressive collegiate résumé includes consecutive NCAA Outdoor 400m titles in 2025 and 2026, having finished runner-up in 2024.
Throughout his collegiate career, Ogazi consistently improved Nigeria’s national 400m record, lowering it from 44.02 seconds to 43.95 seconds, then 43.82 seconds, before producing the historic 43.38-second performance. He also leaves the University of Alabama as the fastest 400m runner in NCAA history.
Reacting to the announcement, Athletics Station described Ogazi’s decision as a significant milestone for both the athlete and Nigerian athletics.
“We are absolutely delighted with Samuel Ogazi’s decision to turn professional. He has conquered the collegiate ranks and leaves as arguably the greatest 400m athlete in NCAA history. There is little left for him to prove at that level, and this is the natural next step in his journey,” the organisation said.
Athletics Station praised the young sprinter’s discipline, resilience and commitment to excellence, noting that his steady rise from national record holder to one of the fastest men in history demonstrates the potential of Nigerian athletes on the global stage.
The organisation expressed confidence that, with the right professional support, Ogazi would become a major force in international athletics and a consistent contender for medals at global championships.
It also called on Nigerians, corporate sponsors and the athletics community to support the young star as he begins his professional career.
With his collegiate chapter now closed, Ogazi is expected to shift his focus to the international professional circuit, where he will compete against the world’s elite while carrying Nigeria’s hopes for future global success.
