As the much-anticipated Ofala Festival 2025 approaches, the historic city of Onitsha is alive with age-old ceremonies that reaffirm its rich cultural legacy. This year’s festival, guided by the theme Njiko na Ntachi, meaning unity and perseverance, pays tribute to the unyielding spirit and togetherness of the Onitsha people.
The journey to the grand festivity began with sacred rituals symbolising thanksgiving and spiritual renewal. The owuwaji, or yam festival, opened the season with celebrations of abundance and gratitude, setting a hopeful tone for the months ahead. Next, the monarch’s annual spiritual retreat, Inye Ukwu Na Nlo Eze Onicha, saw the King quietly reflecting on the future paths and blessings for his kingdom in seclusion. The Ogbalido, a solemn feast of atonement, prepared the community on the eve of the monarch’s public appearance, as the people readied themselves for the royal procession and ceremonial events.
The main festival days promise magnificent displays of culture and community spirit. On October 17, Iru Ofala will honor the monarch and his chiefs with regal splendor and deeply symbolic rites, showcasing the traditional regalia unique to Onitsha’s heritage. The following day, Azu Ofala will shine the spotlight on the people themselves, with vibrant performances by age grades celebrating their loyalty and unity under their revered leader.
Nn’emeka Maduegbuna, Chairman of the Ofala Strategic Marketing and Communications Subcommittee, expressed enthusiasm for the event: “The Ofala Festival is more than a celebration; it is a living testament to our shared history, traditions, and the strength of our community. This year’s theme, unity and perseverance, reminds us that together we can overcome challenges and build a prosperous future.”
As Onitsha prepares to welcome both locals and visitors to partake in these magnificent rites and joyous festivities, the Ofala Festival stands as a vivid reminder of a people’s resilience, heritage, and communal bonds that withstand the test of time.
