Lagos-based sports philanthropist, Cardinal James Odunmbaku has expressed delight with the organisation and standard of play by the participating teams in the ongoing Odunmbaku Gold Cup.

The grassroots soccer tourney, which was sponsored by Cardinal James Odunmbaku and tournament financier, Chief Iky Madu Obi, is being played across several venues in Lagos.

Speaking on behalf of cup donor, tournament coordinator, Prince Sulaiman Gbadamosi said the donor is highly impressed with the standard of play and reactions of soccer enthusiasts since the competition kicked off two weeks ago.

“Our cup donor is happy about the progress of the competition especially in the area of organisation and media coverage.”

He also commended the match officials who officiated all the matches for the job well done and promised to reward the finalists and outstanding players handsomely.

Prince Sulaiman however said the donor popularly known as “Baba Eto” implored all the teams to play according to the rules of the game saying that the competition is being sponsored to win souls for the Christ.

Speaking in similar vein, Madu Obi also commended the organisers for their commitment since competition started and urged the remaining teams to shun vices that can affect the image of the soccer fiesta.

Meanwhile, two quarterfinal matches in the female category were played on Sunday afternoon at the Igando palace playground, Lagos.

Adebisi Rodiat of Sgh Sports is the leading top scorer, while, Ajayi Maria, of Royal Toms, Teslimat, of Asheyori Queen, Mustapha Ayomide and Emmanuel Benita of New Generation are all in 2 goals each.

The closing ceremony will be held on 4, November at the FIFA legacy pitch of the national stadium, Surulere.
