Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has criticised Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and others advocating for real-time electronic transmission of election results, claiming that their push is driven by political weakness rather than electoral reform.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, Omokri argued that those demanding real-time transmission of election results from polling units lack the political structure required under Nigeria’s current electoral system to compete effectively.

“The reason why someone like Peter Obi is doing this is because they don’t have a real party structure.

“If you have a polling unit, you are meant to have your party agent in every polling unit. Once you have your party agent in every polling unit, it is impossible to rig, he said.

Omokri also gave an instance where he tried to transfer money from Peter Obi’s bank and the transaction failed, citing network coverage and operational capacity as possible hindrances that must be avoided.

“I have tried to send money using Peter Obi’s bank and the money has failed to get there and still failed to get reversed…we are still waiting for that money to come back.”

His remarks come amid renewed debate over proposed amendments to the Electoral Act, particularly provisions concerning the electronic transmission of election results.
