Take Back Nigeria Initiative (TBNI), has expressed concern over failure of the concerned Federal Government agencies to obey the judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja, ordering release of Nigerians in Ethiopia prisons.

In a communiqué signed by the National Coordinator of TBNI, Abumchukwu Okoye, the group narrated how it approached the Federal High Court, Abuja, in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/305/2024, seeking for an order of mandamus and order of release against Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Ministry of Foreign Affairs and others.

On November 24, 2024, Justice I. E. Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, granted the Order saying, “Consequently an Order of Mandamus is hereby made compelling the 1st & 2nd respondents to receive and return Nigerians detained in Kaliti, Ethiopia prisons back home. Consequent upon the decision and declaration of the Ethiopian Government that they have no budget for their food, firewood, medicine and any other form of welfare, the Nigerian government was called to take them to Nigeria.”

The group noted that November 24, 2025 will make it one full year that the order was made and those Nigerians in Ethiopia prison have not been brought back.

However, TBNI did not fold its hands, instead it has been following the matter up administratively to ensure that the court order is implemented.

The group said: “We have been following up administratively to ensure this order is implemented, even though up till now the order has not been obeyed by the relevant ministry and agencies of government in Nigeria.”
