The Imo State Police Command has reacted to a viral video circulating on social media showing the assault of a young woman and her brother in Okigwe, Imo State, who were reportedly on their way to Abia State University.
In the video shared on X, an armed security personnel can be seen threatening to shoot a young man, who was also physically assaulted, during an alteraction.
The victim’s sister, who recorded the video, also alleged she was beaten by the same suspects.
In a Monday statement signed by its Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Henry Okoye, the command clarified that the armed men seen in the video were not police officers but personnel of the Imo State Vigilante Organisation.
According to the command, the two suspects have been identified as Ejiogu Nchekwube and Caleb Onyebuchi.
The command spokesman said the suspects have been arrested and are currently detained at the Okigwe Divisional Police Headquarters while investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The statement quoted the Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, as reaffirming the command’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, and respect for the rights of members of the public.
“He assures that anyone found culpable will face appropriate action in accordance with the law,” the statement reads in part.
The command also urged the public to remain calm and avoid sharing unverified information, advising that updates should be sourced from official channels.
Okoye said further details would be released to the public as the investigation progresses.
