Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has challenged corps members posted to the state to do all within their powers to fight economic crimes and other vices associated with youths.
He also commended the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme for its roles in the development of the rural areas.
The governor gave the commendation, on Thursday, on the occasion of the swearing-in ceremony of the 2017 Batch “B” stream II orientation course held at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Okada in Ovia North East local government area of the state.
The governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Philip Shuaibu, said the scheme was designed to serve as a medium for national unity and integration while assisting in ensuring even spread of the much needed professional manpower in the country through the mobilization and deployment of young graduates to states other than their states of origin.
He said the state government would continue to support the scheme to succeed in achieving its laudable goals, stressing that it also beholves on the NYSC to reciprocate its kind gestures by joining hands with the state government in its developmental strides.
According to the governor, “as good ambassadors of the scheme, it is expected of the corps memmbers to be involved in the fight against economic crimes, drug trafficking, human trafficking through mass and adult literacy programmes, and community healthcare delivery services.”
Earlier, in his welcome address, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mr. Abdulahi Yusuf Baba, while presenting the 2,230 corps members before the governor, said he was delighted to welcome them to the state.
He charged them to contribute their quota to the development of the state, saying that he has no doubt in his mind that the corps members will live up to their expectation.
