A group of final-year students from the Department of Dramatic Arts at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has brought to the stage one of the institution’s most defining yet little-understood moments in history with the production of Afrika: A Shattered Dream, held on July 10 at the university’s Pit Theatre.

The production shed light on the events surrounding the cult attack of July 10, 1999, which claimed the lives of five people, including the then Students’ Union General Secretary, George Iwilade, popularly known as “Afrika.”

For many current students, July 10 is a date marked annually through memorial activities, but few fully understand the events that shaped the commemoration. Through Afrika: A Shattered Dream, the student theatre company bridged that gap by retelling the story of courage, sacrifice, and the fight against cultism that transformed campus life.

According to the producers, the play prompted audiences to reflect on an uncomfortable but important truth—that the relative peace, freedom, and security enjoyed by students today were secured through the sacrifices of those who confronted violent cult groups, with Iwilade ultimately paying the ultimate price.

Rather than serving as mere entertainment, the production presents itself as both a historical lesson and a tribute, encouraging a new generation of students to appreciate the cost of the safer learning environment they now enjoy.

The drama traces the journey of George Iwilade, a modest law student serving as General Secretary of the Students’ Union in 1999. The story unfolds after fellow student Susan witnesses a cult initiation ceremony and reports the incident to the union leadership.

Determined to confront the rising influence of cultism on campus, Afrika joins forces with the then Students’ Union President, Legacy, to mobilise students against the criminal groups.

Their resistance, however, provokes a violent backlash as cultists allegedly invite reinforcements from sister groups in other institutions before launching a deadly invasion of the campus.

While Legacy survives the attack, Afrika is murdered in his sleep, becoming one of the most enduring symbols of student activism and sacrifice in the university’s history.

The production deliberately avoids graphic depictions of violence, opting for a restrained approach that emphasises the tragedy’s emotional and historical significance rather than its brutality.

Directed by Eziefule Emmanuel, the play adopts a Brechtian theatrical style that encourages direct engagement between performers and the audience, drawing viewers into the story and challenging them to reflect critically on its themes rather than observing from a distance.

Amusan Ebenezer writes, and the production is stage-managed by Egbri Aghogho, with Abimbola Leke serving as Theatre Manager.

The cast features Pedro Charles as Afrika, Oyedele Saheed as Legacy, Oladepo Joy Olayeni as Susan, Ajunam Maryclaire as Afrika’s mother, Awode Stella as the cult leader, and Adedapo Precious as Wale Omole, with Eziefule Francis appearing in dual roles as narrator and performer.

With its blend of historical accuracy, emotional storytelling, and social relevance, Afrika: A Shattered Dream aims to ensure that one of OAU’s most painful chapters is not forgotten, while inspiring conversations about leadership, courage, and the enduring fight against violence on Nigerian campuses.
