Oando Clean Energy (OCEL), the renewable energy subsidiary of Oando Energy Resources, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Cross River State government, outlining plans for renewable energy initiatives within the state.

The agreement reached at the ongoing COP28 discussions, details the deployment of electric vehicles for mass transportation, the establishment of an electric vehicle assembly plant and the construction of a substantial 100MW wind plant for power generation.

The Governor of the State,  Bassey Otu, who was represented by the State’s Commissioner for Special Duties, Oden Ewa at the MoU signing, underscored its significance, characterising it as a decisive step towards a cleaner and more sustainable future for Cross River State. He emphasised the envisioned transition of the mass transit system to cleaner and cost-effective fuels, coupled with the utilisation of wind resources for widespread electrification.

“This partnership will allow the use of wind to provide electrification for our people. I commend Oando Clean Energy for their innovative solutions that address the impact of climate change in Nigeria and her citizens,” he said.

On his part, the OCEL President/CEO, Ainojie Irune, expressed the company’s commitment to ensuring a seamless and accessible transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy landscape.

Irune conveyed confidence not only in the technology but also in the collaborative partnership, with a focus on ensuring that the state government and its citizens reap the benefits of sustainable power generation.

“Oando Clean Energy’s scope spans the entire 35 states of the federation and the FCT and with one state at a time, we will create a cleaner, more viable energy ecosystem for Nigeria and our people. This is another testament to OCEL driving the energy transition narrative in Nigeria.

“The successful outcomes from the 90-day Proof of Concept (PoC) phase of the electric mass transit buses deployed in Lagos State, in partnership with Lagos state and the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) yielded among others the covering of over 43,800 kilometres, carrying over 73,000 passengers, saving 21,000 liters of diesel and curbing 57.8 tons in CO2 emissions. On the back of this successful test, the partnership will progress to pilot phase,” he said.

OCEL showcased its clean energy solutions at a side event hosted at the Nigeria pavilion during COP28. The event provided a platform to demonstrate the company’s contributions to supporting the government in achieving its net-zero ambition by 2060.
