The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme has been described as one of Nigeria’s most enduring institutions and a vital pillar in nation building.

Abia State Coordinator of the NYSC, Alhaji Yunusa Tanimu, stated this during activities marking the 53rd anniversary of the Scheme in Umuahia, Abia State.

Speaking at the commemorative event attended by NYSC officials from across the South-East, Tanimu recalled that the scheme was established in 1973 to foster reconciliation, mutual understanding and national integration following the Nigerian civil war.

He noted that more than five decades later, the NYSC continues to justify the vision of its founding fathers through the deployment of millions of graduates, who have contributed to community development in education, healthcare, agriculture, voter education, rural infrastructure, environmental sanitation and entrepreneurship development across the country.

Tanimu particularly applauded corps members serving in Abia State for their resilience, creativity and unwavering dedication to grassroots development, stressing that their contributions continue to inspire hope for a stronger and more united Nigeria.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the NYSC leadership and staff to the ideals of the Scheme, and pledged continued dedication to discipline, patriotism, integrity, national unity and selfless service.

He equally promised sustained mentoring and support for corps members towards successful service delivery.

He emphasised that the scheme must continue to evolve in response to changing national realities, insisting that youth empowerment and national development remain central to the NYSC mandate.

Tanimu commended the Abia State Government, security agencies, and employers of labour, traditional rulers, community leaders and partner organisations for their support to the Scheme over the years, describing their collaboration as critical to the success of NYSC operations in the state.
