Nwifuru sets up joint task force over rising killings in Ebonyi

Chief-Francis-Nwifuru

Ebonyi State Governor, Chief Francis Nwifuru, has directed security agencies to set up a joint task force to combat killings and other crime in the state.

There have been killings in some parts of the state, including Ohaukwu and Izzi local government areas of the state, in recent days.

Four policemen attached to the state police command and two girls were killed at a security checkpoint on Hilltop/Egugwu Agbaja/Nwofe’ road, last week. The road leads to the governor’s village in Izzi local government area.

The governor banned vehicles with tinted glasses and sirens in the state following the incident.

On Sunday, March 10, gunmen killed a middle -aged man in Ezzamgbo, Ohaukwu local government area, forcing the governor to hold a security council meeting.

Briefing newsmen shortly after the meeting at the old Government House, Abakaliki, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Grace Umezurike, said the governor’s directive on the security agencies to set up joint task force was hinged on the recent attacks by hoodlums in the state.

“The governor expressed concern over the incessant insecurity in the state, with particular reference to the incidents at Hilltop Road and Ohaukwu Local Government Area. The council resolved that there should be a joint task force team drawn from all the security agencies operating in the state,” she stated.

She also disclosed that the council resolved that all aides working with local government chairmen would be profiled with a view to finding out information about them, including what they are doing for their respective council areas.

The SSG said the security chiefs assured that they would intensify efforts to fish out the hoodlums.
