As the Yuletide season beckons, commercial drivers, especially those plying interstate routes, have been admonished to drive carefully, ensure their vehicles are in good shape, and observe adequate rest to avert crashes and other unwanted incidents.
The Acting President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Issa Ore, gave the advice as tips on how to have crash-free trips, especially during end of the year rush.
He stated that commercial drivers, especially those going on long journeys, should always ensure their vehicles are in good condition to avoid unnecessary breakdown and delay on the highways
“As commercial drivers plying interstate routes, you should always ensure your vehicles are in good condition. You should check your tyres, lighting system, and brakes. Your wipers must be working perfectly because of the rain and harmattan in some cases.
“You should make sure all your vehicle papers are valid to avoid confrontation with the law enforcement agencies like the Police, the Vehicle Inspection Service and the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC). Ensure all your vehicle papers are up to date.”
Alhaji Ore equally advised motorists to try as much as possible to avoid night journeys because of the risks and dangers associated with it.
“They should always check out for their journey during the day. Visibility is always poor in the night and apart from that, the security of the country should also be put into consideration. To avoid unpleasant situations, it is advisable to do away with night travels.”
He appealed to drivers to always ensure they have enough rest before they embark on long trips. “Don’t be tempted by the urge to make more trips or more money. Try to relax always.”
