The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, has decorated the Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government, Hon. Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, as a Media Games Ambassador ahead of the 2026 NUJ Media Games scheduled to hold from October 5 to October 10 at the Agege Stadium, Lagos.
The decoration ceremony took place on Wednesday at the Agege Local Government Secretariat, where the union commended the council chairman for his outstanding leadership, commitment to grassroots development and sustained investment in sports.
Speaking during the event, Chairman of the NUJ Lagos State Council, Adeleye Ajayi, said Hon. Obasa was carefully selected for the honour in recognition of his people-centred administration and remarkable contributions to community development.
According to Ajayi, the Agege council boss has distinguished himself through strategic investments in infrastructure, youth empowerment and programmes that have positively impacted residents.
“Your administration has continued to set a commendable standard through people-oriented policies, strategic investments in community infrastructure and an unwavering commitment to improving the welfare of residents,” Ajayi said.
He noted that Obasa’s achievements had positioned Agege as a model of progressive local governance, adding that one of the defining features of his administration was its deliberate focus on grassroots sports development.
“Your administration understands the transformative power of sports in promoting youth engagement, talent discovery, healthy living and social cohesion. Through deliberate investments in sporting infrastructure and youth-focused initiatives, you have demonstrated that sustainable community development begins with empowering young people and providing them with opportunities to excel,” he said.
Ajayi explained that the honour was reserved for individuals whose contributions to sports development and community advancement align with the objectives of the NUJ Media Games.
“It is in recognition of these exceptional contributions that the NUJ Sports Committee carefully selected you as one of the distinguished Media Games Ambassadors,” he added.
Responding, Hon. Obasa expressed appreciation to the NUJ for the recognition, describing the honour as a source of encouragement to continue investing in youth and community development.

The council chairman commended journalists for their vital role in nation-building, noting that the media remains indispensable in projecting government activities and informing the public.
“I want to thank journalists for the great work they are doing in the country. Without journalists, the volume of work we do would not be known or visible to the public. I appreciate the media for beaming its searchlight on our activities and we will continue to do more for our community by engaging youths through sports,” he stated.
Obasa stressed that sports had become a major economic driver across the world, creating employment opportunities and contributing significantly to national development.
He said the Agege Local Government had remained consistent in promoting sports through initiatives such as the Obasa Games and the Obasa Summer Games, which have successfully engaged young people and attracted participants from across the country.
“We are working towards making Agege the face of sports in Lagos and indeed Nigeria. We have sustained these efforts for the past four years through initiatives aimed at ensuring young people remain meaningfully engaged within the community,” he said.
The chairman pledged the local government’s full support for the forthcoming NUJ Media Games, assuring the organisers that the Agege Stadium would be available for the competition.
“We will be glad to support the Media Games because we are proud to be associated with anything that promotes sports in Lagos and Nigeria. Our facilities at the Agege Stadium will be available for the Media Games and we will be part of the event,” he assured.
Obasa also announced that the local government would inaugurate its maiden Lagos Mini Football League on July 31, describing it as the first initiative of its kind in the state.
The highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of a customised NUJ Media Games jersey and face cap to Hon. Obasa by the NUJ Chairman and members of the council.
