Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, has approved the appointment of Mohammed Lawan Ahmad Muhammad Sani as the 17th Emir of Gumel.
The new monarch succeeds his father, Ahmad Muhammad Sani II, who died in a Cairo hospital, Egypt, on Thursday, September 3, after 46 years on the throne.
Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Bala Ibrahim, announced the appointment while briefing journalists in Dutse, saying it followed recommendations by the Gumel Emirate Council kingmakers and the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs.
Until his appointment, the new emir held the traditional title of Chiroman Gumel and served as Director of Cyber Security at the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
Namadi thanked the Gumel Emirate kingmakers, led by Wazirin Gumel, Adamu Muhammad Nasoro, for their role in the selection process.
The governor also expressed appreciation to the Emirs of Hadejia, Kazaure, Ringim and Dutse, who constitute the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs, for their advice during the process.
He congratulated the new emir and wished him a successful reign and many years of service to Gumel Emirate and Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has described the late emir as an epitome of tradition and excellence.
Speaking to journalists during a condolence visit to Namadi, Zulum described the late monarch as a gentleman who bore no ill feelings towards others irrespective of differences.
He said the late emir’s long reign and disposition towards people had earned him respect within and beyond Jigawa State.
