In demonstration of its commitment to workers’ welfare, the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has awarded N10,588,181.33 to Mr. Afolabi Mudasiru, compensating for medical expenses incurred from a workplace injury.

The payment aligns with the provisions of the Employees’ Compensation Act (ECA) of 2010, underscoring NSITF’s dedication to supporting employees affected by occupational accidents.

The compensation was presented to Ms. Alenke Aik, Chief Human Resources Officer at Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) Plc, where Mr. Mudasiru is employed. The handover took place at the NSITF Lagos Regional Office, with Agboma Okoroafor, Acting Regional Manager, representing the Managing Director/CEO, Mr. Oluwaseun Mayomi Faleye.

During the ceremony, Okoroafor emphasised that the Medical Expenses Refund (MER) is a core element of the Employees’ Compensation Scheme. “This cheque is a manifestation of our unwavering commitment to our mandate.

“It not only signifies our dedication to worker welfare but also reflects our shared values and determination to make a meaningful difference in the lives of employees.”

Okoroafor praised EKEDC for its exceptional compliance with the ECA, 2010. “The company’s consistent and timely contributions to the scheme are commendable and have been duly recognised by our management,” she noted.

Ms. Aik expressed gratitude to NSITF for its prompt action in handling the compensation. She elaborated on Mr. Mudasiru’s situation, explaining that he was injured in July 2022 after falling from a height while performing his duties.

Aik reiterated EKEDC’s commitment to its employees, emphasising the company’s adherence to statutory obligations by contributing one percent of its monthly payroll to NSITF, as required by the ECA 2010. “Our commitment extends beyond legal compliance; it reflects our responsibility towards our employees and their well-being,” she said.

Acknowledging the inevitability of workplace accidents despite best safety measures, Aik emphasized the importance of the Employees’ Compensation Act. “Mr. Mudasiru’s unfortunate accident underscores the necessity of NSITF’s role in providing compensation and support,” she added. “We are thankful for NSITF’s proactive approach and dedication to this essential service.”
