NPF should strengthen retirement preparation – Alabi

Deputy Inspector-General of Police, DIG Sylvester Abiodun Alabi (Rtd), has urged serving officers to begin preparing early for life after retirement, stressing that life beyond the uniform should be viewed as a new phase of purpose and opportunity rather than an end.

Speaking at the Gallant Officers Welfare Initiative 2026, organised by Naija Police & U (Naijapoliceu), Alaba, in a paper entitled “Life After Police: Building Purpose, Welfare, and Opportunities Beyond Service,” said that many officers devote decades to serving the nation, only to encounter unexpected challenges after retirement, including financial uncertainty, health concerns, social isolation, and difficulties adjusting to life outside the structured environment of the Force.

“The transition becomes more than leaving a job; it becomes the challenge of rediscovering identity, direction, and meaning,” Alabi said.

He encouraged officers to see retirement as a second mission and explore opportunities in entrepreneurship, agriculture, transportation, property management, security consulting, mentorship, and community leadership.

Alabi also highlighted opportunities within Nigeria’s private security industry, noting that retired officers possess valuable expertise that can continue to contribute to national development.

On financial planning, he cautioned against fraudulent investment schemes and advised officers to seek professional guidance, invest wisely, and acquire skills capable of generating sustainable income after service.

He further emphasised the importance of family support, describing family members as the foundation that sustains officers throughout their careers and beyond retirement.

The retired DIG called on the Nigeria Police Force and relevant stakeholders to strengthen retirement preparation programmes, improve healthcare support for retirees, and introduce training in financial management, entrepreneurship, and personal development.

He concluded with a message of hope: “No officer should ever feel forgotten, alone, or believe that their best years are behind them.”

The event brought together serving and retired officers to discuss welfare, retirement preparedness, and opportunities beyond active service.
