No GMO mangoes, grapefruits, cassava, others in Nigeria –FG

Federal-Government-of-Nigeria

Fred Itua, Abuja

The Federal Government, yesterday, dismissed claims in some quarters that there are Genetically Modified Orgasms (GMOs) mangoes, grape fruits, cassava, among others in circulation across the country.

Director General of National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), Rufus Ebegba, denied this to newsmen in Abuja, and listed some commercially-approved genetically modified crops globally.

He said despite the approval of some products by the agency, they are yet to hit the Nigerian market. He said the products will undergo further procedures to certify that they are good for human consumption.

Ebegba said: “I wish to emphasis that the absence of biosafety system will amount to dumping of unauthorised genetically modified products into the country with its attendant adverse effects to human, animal, environment and the economy. The agency will continue to ensure that only safe GMOs would be allowed either for planting, consumption or processing in Nigeria.”
