The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has provided insights into the recent fuel scarcity experienced in parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and across Nigeria, attributing it to disruptions in the ship-to-ship (STS) transfer of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) caused by adverse weather conditions.

In a statement released on Monday, NNPC’s spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, explained that recent thunderstorms had impacted crucial operations such as berthing at jetties, truck load-outs, and transportation of petroleum products to filling stations. These disruptions severely affected the logistics of station supply.

“Due to the flammability of petroleum products and in compliance with regulations from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), loading of petrol during rainstorms and lightning is prohibited,” stated Soneye. “Strict adherence to these safety regulations is essential to prevent risks to trucks, filling stations, and human lives.”

The company further highlighted that flooding of truck routes exacerbated the situation, particularly hindering the movement of PMS from coastal areas to Abuja.

NNPC assured the public that it is actively collaborating with stakeholders to address these logistical challenges and restore uninterrupted supply of petrol to affected regions.

“Loading operations have resumed in areas where weather conditions have improved, and we anticipate continuous improvement over the coming days to achieve full restoration of normal supply,” the statement affirmed.

Additionally, NNPC urged motorists to refrain from panic buying and hoarding of petroleum products, emphasizing that efforts are underway to stabilize the supply chain and ensure adequate availability across all regions.
