The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Sokoto State has rejected a claim by NULGE’s National President, Ali Haruna Kankara.
He reportedly said Sokoto had not started the new minimum wage. NLC Chairman Aliyu Abdullahi Jangale and NULGE’s Ibrahim Abubakar Giro called it “misleading and completely untrue.”
They spoke at a joint press conference in Sokoto on Wednesday. The unions denied a report suggesting the state hasn’t rolled out the N70,000 minimum wage. They said Sokoto was among the first states to fully implement it in January this year. “Workers across all levels: State, Local Government, and LGEAs are already receiving the new wage,” they noted.

Jangale was upset by the misinformation from NULGE’s national leadership. “It’s disheartening to see such a claim coming from our national president. We expected better,” he said. He urged labour leaders to check facts before speaking out.
He also praised Governor Ahmed Aliyu. “He’s the most worker-friendly Governor in Nigeria,” Jangale said, pointing to the state’s focus on workers’ welfare. Beyond the wage, the government cleaned up the payroll system for transparency. “We were part of the verification committee that fished out ghost workers. This was a key part of preparations before rolling out the new salary structure,” he explained.
The unions also thanked the state for clearing billions in gratuities and pensions. Plus, it restored cash allocations to agencies and ensured timely salary payments. “Governor Ahmed Aliyu didn’t just comply with President Tinubu’s directive, he led the way. And we’re proud of that,” Jangale added.
The union leaders promised to keep workers’ rights first. They also asked the media to verify reports about citizens’ welfare.
