The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) emphasized the importance of a safe and inclusive online environment during a recent meeting with representatives of TikTok.

The Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, reiterated the need for responsible practices regarding both human and Artificial Intelligence (AI) use. The discussion, held at NITDA’s headquarters in Abuja, focused on forging partnerships to support Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda, which aligns with President Muhammadu Buhari’s focus on strengthening national security.

Inuwa highlighted content moderation as a key strategy to address online challenges like hate speech, misinformation, and cyberbullying, particularly in protecting minors. He pointed to the agency’s “Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries” as a framework ensuring digital safety and aligning with global best practices.

“Collaboration is crucial,” Inuwa stressed. “We cannot achieve our goals in isolation. We need to work together to deliver services and advance the nation.”

The NITDA chief outlined key areas for collaboration. Leveraging TikTok’s platform could contribute to Nigeria’s progress through initiatives like Digital Literacy for All (DL4ALL), capacity building, knowledge sharing, and training programs. Additionally, efforts to curb misinformation and enhance digital safety would create a more secure and empowering online space for Nigerian users.

Inuwa further explained NITDA’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan 2.0 (SRAP 2024-2027), which focuses on eight pillars. These pillars include fostering digital literacy and talent development, building a robust technology research ecosystem, strengthening policy and legal frameworks, promoting inclusive access to digital infrastructure, and enhancing cybersecurity and digital trust. Additionally, the plan aims to nurture an innovative and entrepreneurial ecosystem, forge strategic partnerships, and cultivate a vibrant organizational culture with an agile workforce.

Mrs. Tokunbo Ibrahim, Head of Government Regulation and Public Policy for TikTok Nigeria and West Africa, acknowledged NITDA’s role as a critical stakeholder in advancing Nigeria’s digital economy. She commended NITDA’s initiatives, programs, and policies that align with TikTok’s goals. These efforts provide Nigerians with a platform to market, sell, and export their products, services, and talents globally.

Ibrahim highlighted TikTok’s commitment to online safety, emphasizing the importance of creating a secure cyberspace for users to thrive. She mentioned projects like the Africa Creator Hub, which supports and educates creators on content creation and platform exploration.

“African Mall” is another initiative mentioned by Ibrahim. This program aims to promote African products and services to the world. Creators are equipped to create content showcasing Nigerian products suitable for export, potentially attracting foreign investment.

The meeting between NITDA and TikTok signifies a collaborative effort towards a safer and more inclusive digital space in Nigeria. By leveraging each other’s strengths, both entities can empower Nigerians and contribute to the country’s digital transformation journey.
