Director General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Comrade Philip Shaibu has declared that the certificates being issued by the institute are now worthless and has thus suspends academic year for next season.

Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, also echoed this position.

Both Shaibu and Dikko spoke at the inauguration of the power-packed Advisory Committee headed by Engr. Musa Kida, Chairman of NNPC Ltd and President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, yesterday in Lagos.

According to the former Deputy Governor of Edo State, he has decided to set up an advisory committee as part of his 10-year strategic plan to reposition the NIS as Africa’s Premier sports institute.

“I’ve directed that there should be no admission next year because as it is, the NIS certificates are worthless while we will digitalize examinations from next year, no more paper exams,” he said.

He charged the advisory committee to work towards repositioning the institute along the four “Rs” of rebrand, relaunch, reposition and revertilise operations of the NIS.

On his part, the chairman of the NSC, Mallam Dikko said the reason for establishing the institute has since been lost. “So we most our ways to deliver NIS because it has lost its essence, it’s time to refocus. We want to upscale NIS to CAF and FIFA level where we can organize executive sports courses.”

The committee, described by insiders as a blockbuster team, is tasked with charting a strategic pathway to reposition the NIS to deliver effectively on its core mandate and align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The composition of the committee, according to Comrade Shaibu, reflects a deliberate blend of academic rigor, corporate strategy, technical sports knowledge, and media insight—a rare convergence aimed at redefining the future of sports education and development in Nigeria.

Apart from Engr. Musa Kida, other members of the committee are sports administration and Mike Itemuagbor, Professor Ken Anugweje, Dr. Kweku Tandoh, a former Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Sports Commission and Mary Onyali.

The committee also has Yusuf Ali, Coach Austin Eguavoen, Dr. Alex Mana, Prof. Florence Adeyanju, Prof. Clement Fasan, Prof. Raimi Moronfolu, and Prof. Sadiq Abdulahi, as well as media professionals such as Andrew Abbah (representing SWAN) and Godwin Enakhena.
