The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has taken a dual step toward enhancing both technological innovation and staff welfare with the inauguration of its Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research and Integration Team and the formal approval of updated Conditions of Service.

The newly inaugurated AI team, announced by NiMet Director General/CEO Prof. Charles Anosike, is tasked with identifying opportunities, standards, and best practices for integrating AI into the Agency’s operational forecasting systems.

The initiative aimed at complementing decades of physics-based meteorology with AI-driven approaches, improving the speed, accuracy, and accessibility of weather predictions.

Inaugurating the team, Prof. Anosike noted that building internal AI capacity was essential for sustaining NiMet’s leadership in technological innovation while ensuring responsible deployment in aviation safety, agriculture, disaster risk reduction, and national development.

Simultaneously, NiMet has completed a comprehensive review of its Conditions of Service, following extensive consultations between management and staff unions.

The revised framework, approved by the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, provided clearer guidelines on appointments, promotions, career progression, and disciplinary procedures.

It also strengthens provisions for staff welfare, leave entitlements, and work-life balance, aligning fully with federal civil service standards.

The DG emphasised that the updates would boost staff morale and productivity, ensuring efficient delivery of critical meteorological services.
