The success of any government depends to a very large extent on the people that operate the machinery of the government. The characters of the cabinet members of President Bola Tinubu might make or mar his administration. In this vein, some Nigerians spoke on the type of ministers they expect from the president.

Tinubu should pick people with experience – Aniekan Udosen, socio-political analyst

I am sure President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will appoint competent, experienced, patriotic, incorruptible exco members, devoid of nepotism or godfatherism.  We know and have experienced the harm done by nepotism and godfatherism to every facet of this country.

Nigerians need accountability-minded ministers – Dr Kubra Uya, strategy and perception manager

Nigerians need a government that is competent, committed, and focused on the nation’s growth and well-being. Nigeria will need reformers who are well-versed in economic and other policies and can implement reforms to diversify the economy and other sectors to attract foreign investments, and promote sustainable growth. These individuals should also demonstrate the capacity to prioritise job creation, tackle inflation, and reduce poverty by fostering a conducive business environment and implementing sound fiscal policies.

Tinubu should appoint technocrats – Alfred Chikezie

With the condition of the country so far, what Nigerians need is technocrats and selfless leaders as ministers. Those who will understand the problems of the masses and the country.

Tinubu should appoint those who understand social welfarism – Shedrach Udugbai, former SSA to Edo State Governor

The type of ministers Nigerians currently need in this government, to reposition the narratives, are those who understand in totality the components of social welfarism. Ministers who understand that the government solely exists to serve the welfare of the common man.

Nigerians need ministers devoid of tribal bigotry – David Salami, engineer

My kind of ministers must be easily accessible and must be technocrats who have the technical know-how of the job description. They should be devoid of tribal bigotry, partisan politics, and should be religious tolerant. They must have zero tolerance for corruption.

The ministers should have no criminal records – Imhenrion Omon Martin, businessman

President Bola Tinubu should appoint ministers that have love and compassion for Nigerians, especially the downtroddens, that are patriotic, selfless, good/positive antecedents, without criminal records and knowledgeable about the workings of government and governance. His appointment should not be based on personal sentiments, rather it should be based on competence, capacity character and compassion for Nigerians.

Tinubu should bring technocrats with credibility – Austin Onuoha, a public affairs analyst.

If President Tinubu wants to make impact, he should look for people who have a good grasp of what is on the ground, people who will unite and not people with divisive personalities.

Babangida brought one of the best teams Nigeria ever had. If you look at President Obasanjo’s team, Obasanjo shopped for people even abroad, Obasanjo brought Okonjo Iweala and a couple of others. So those are the kind of people we need; technocrats, people who have credibility, professionals, unifiers who will unify Nigeria not those who will divide the country.

We need ministers that can give workable policies – Julie Okoh, rights activist

We need ministers that can give us policies that will work, not just policies on paper but policies that their ministries are functional, not just functional but will change the people’s lives.

When we were talking about renewed hope, we were talking about a hope that were once almost lost.

We need God-fearing ministers – Armstrong Tseaa, civil servant

I pray President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should recruit fresh technocrats, God fearing and people-centred individuals. He should appoint Nigerians who have excelled in their chosen vocations, trades and profession,s who are detribalised and their creed is Nigeria and Nigeria only.

Tinubu should appoint competent persons – Karl Uchegbu, activist, journalist

Nigerians expect that there will be a clear departure from the past where ministerial positions were handed out as a form of patronage. Nigerians expect President Tinubu to appoint only competent persons as ministers, irrespective of their ideological leanings or affiliations to begin the arduous task of recovery and reflating our economy.

Another expectation is that President Tinubu must appoint honest and transparent Nigerians as ministers. This is important, given the sleaze and shady practices involving most ministers and top government appointees under the immediate past administration.

President should appoint professionals in every sector – Paul Chimodo, an ICT analyst

We are faced with economic challenges. As a result of that, we expect the president to appoint professionals in every sector to help drive growth and create opportunities. The days of using sensitive positions for political patronages are gone. The president needs to look beyond party lines to select individuals who have the capability to deliver and turn the country and its economy around. Above all, he should make sure these individuals do not  have corruption cases  against them.
