A groundbreaking discovery by Nigerian scientist Aderonke Elizabeth Fakayode of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, is offering fresh hope in the fight against heart disease. Her research reveals the potent cardiovascular benefits of Peperomia pellucida—a plant commonly known as pepper elder and widely used in traditional medicine.

Published in the Tropical Journal of Natural Products Researchin October 2023, Fakayode’s study highlights the plant’s ability to combat dyslipidemia, obesity, and hypertension three major risk factors for atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease (CAD). These findings suggest Peperomia pellucida could be a powerful natural alternative to conventional cholesterol-lowering drugs like statins, which are often associated with side effects such as muscle pain, liver issues, and digestive problems.

In controlled lab studies, animals were fed a high-salt, high-fructose diet to induce abnormal cholesterol levels. Fakayode employed a combination of molecular biology and biochemical techniques to monitor treatment outcomes. Treatment with Peperomia pellucida extract for 21 days significantly improved their lipid profiles—lowering harmful LDL and VLDL cholesterol, increasing protective HDL, and restoring antioxidant enzyme levels. These outcomes were comparable to those seen with Atorvastatin, a commonly prescribed statin drug.

Further analysis of the plant identified a rich mix of bioactive compounds—flavonoids, alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, tannins, and triterpenoids—all known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. These properties are crucial in slowing the progression of vascular conditions like atherosclerosis.

“Given the strong link between dyslipidemia and vascular diseases,” Fakayode explains, “my ongoing research aims to explore how Peperomia pellucida may directly influence the biological mechanisms that drive these chronic conditions.”

Her discovery not only validates the therapeutic value of a locally available plant but also bridges traditional knowledge with modern science. By exploring the plant’s effects on blood vessel health, immune response, and plaque buildup, Fakayode’s work opens new doors for safer, more accessible treatments for cardiovascular disease.

This innovation has sparked interest across scientific disciplines and has drawn both national and international recognition. It also underscores the potential of indigenous plants in developing effective, culturally relevant health solutions.

Fakayode’s research is a shining example of how homegrown, evidence-based science can shape the future of medicine—offering new tools in the global fight against heart disease, one of the world’s leading causes of death.
