In a rare display of corporate inclusivity, New Horizons Nigeria has offered lifetime employment to Olayinka Akinbiyi, a visually impaired graduate. The announcement, made by the Managing Director, Mr. Tim Akano, highlights the company’s commitment to social responsibility and empowering individuals with disabilities.

Akinbiyi, who overcame the challenges of losing her sight at the age of two due to measles and the loss of her mother at birth, bagged a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from the University of Benin in 2024. Her inspiring story captured the attention of Mr. Akano during a visit to the new NYSC state coordinator.

“Olayinka’s unwavering determination in the face of immense adversity is truly inspirational.  “At New Horizons, we are dedicated to fostering opportunities for individuals with disabilities, and we firmly believe that her skills and potential will be an invaluable asset to our organisation,” Akano stated.

The comprehensive employment package offered to Akinbiyi includes extensive ICT skills training. New Horizons also plans to deploy her to a school for the visually impaired in Oshodi, where she will utilise her newly acquired skills to educate students. The company has further committed to providing the school with necessary resources and ensuring Akinbiyi’s lifelong salary. This initiative aligns with New Horizons’ ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, which include the annual distribution of over 20,000 ICT scholarships, a programme that has been sustained for the past 15 years.

The foundation has undertaken several community development projects. These include the renovation of Baptist Day School in Oluponna, Mr. Akano’s alma mater, where the foundation provided a borehole, secured fencing and distributed writing materials and uniforms to 300 students.

The foundation has also launched the NYSC+ (PLUS) scheme, a mentorship programme aimed at guiding selected corps members through their service year and assisting them in securing employment or pursuing further education. Mr. Akano personally mentored 10 corps members in 2024, all of whom have since gained employment. The scheme aims to cultivate the next generation of Nigerian leaders by equipping them with essential skills, vision and leadership qualities.
