Nigeria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have entered a five-year defence and military cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening security collaboration.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Mohammed Bello Matawalle, and his Saudi counterpart, Dr. Khaleed H. Al-Biyari, on behalf of their respective governments.

The pact, announced in a statement by the Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of State for Defence, Ahmed Dan Wudil, covered joint efforts in military training, intelligence-sharing, defence production, strategic operations and broader security development.

According to the defence ministry, the agreement represents a major leap in bilateral relations and signals a renewed commitment to jointly address emerging security threats.

It expressed optimism that the collaboration would strengthen national defence capacity and contribute to ending security challenges in affected parts of the country.

The Ministry welcomed the partnership, assuring Nigerians that ongoing security issues would soon be over with sustained international cooperation and enhanced operational capabilities.

Nigeria, India seek to advance defence partnership.

The Nigerian Army and Indian Armed Forces have reaffirmed their commitment  to strengthen bilateral military cooperation and advance shared security interests.

This was emphasised when the Indian Defence Adviser to Nigeria, Col Manoj Singh, paid a visit to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-Gen Waidi Shaibu, yesterday in Abuja.

A statement by the acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col Appolonia Anele, yesterday, in Abuja, indicated this.

Shaibu, according to the statement, stressed the importance of maintaining an enduring partnership with the Indian Armed Forces.

He described India’s long-standing support in military training, capacity building and defence development as invaluable.

Shaibu said there was a need to enhance collaboration in counter-terrorism operations, intelligence sharing, equipment support and professional military education.

Earlier, Col. Singh, according to the statement, commended the Nigerian Army for its sustained efforts in tackling security challenges nationwide and expressed appreciation for the warm reception.

He emphasised India’s willingness to broaden defence cooperation, expand training opportunities for Nigerian Army personnel and deepen technical exchanges in critical areas of mutual benefit.
