As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate Global Surveyors’ Day, professionals in the sector have raised an alarm over the increasing rate of quackery, warning that it poses a serious threat to standards, safety, and sustainable development.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Lagos State Branch, Mr. Adedeji Olanrewaju, made this known during the 2026 Global Surveyors’ Day celebration held in Alausa, Lagos, with the theme “Surveyors’ Challenges in Multi-Sectoral Growth.”

Represented by the branch vice chairman, Mr. Moses Ogundare, Olanrewaju identified quackery as a major challenge confronting the profession.

He also highlighted other issues, including the high cost of technological integration, workforce and skill gaps, complex regulatory requirements, environmental risks, and unsafe working conditions impacting efficiency.

He urged surveyors to upgrade their skills in line with modern technology to remain relevant and uphold professional standards.

Olanrewaju also emphasized the need for mentorship within the profession to preserve ethical boundaries, while calling on the public to desist from patronizing unqualified practitioners.

Similarly, the Chairman of the Association of Private Practising Surveyors of Nigeria (APPSN), Lagos State Branch, Mr. Olaoluwa Afolabi, represented by Vice Chairman Mr. Adams Olugbenga, stressed the importance of ethical practice.

He warned licensed surveyors against aiding illegal operators and reiterated the dangers posed by quackery to the integrity of the profession.

The stakeholders, however, commended the Lagos State Government for its efforts in tackling land grabbing, noting that such policies support professional surveying practice and protect property rights.

Activities marking the celebration included indoor games, aerobics, and interactive sessions aimed at fostering unity among practitioners.

In his goodwill message, the Acting Surveyor-General of Lagos State, Mr. Saliu Odupe, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting surveyors and advancing sustainable growth within the sector.
