Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after participating in the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) in Luanda, Angola, where Nigeria renewed its push for stronger African action against conflicts and recurring xenophobic attacks.
Shettima, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the high-level summit, joined other African leaders in deliberations on strategies for strengthening peace, security and conflict resolution across the continent.
At the summit, Nigeria called for stronger African-led mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution, while also demanding urgent continental action to address recurring xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks against Africans and other foreign nationals in South Africa.
The Nigerian delegation also backed the Luanda Action Plan and called for sustainable financing of Africa’s peace and security architecture.
According to a statement issued by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, Nigeria further advocated stronger collective responsibility among member states of the African Union and greater African ownership of solutions to the continent’s conflicts.
The Vice President returned to Abuja after concluding his engagements at the summit in Angola.
The AU extraordinary session brought together Heads of State and Government to examine critical challenges confronting the continent, particularly insecurity, conflicts and the need to strengthen Africa’s capacity to deliver lasting peace through home-grown solutions.
