The Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC) says it has distributed both sensitive and non-sensitive materials across the 25 LGAs for Saturday’s local government elections in the state.

The Chairman of the commission and immediate past Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Engineer Mohammed Jibrin Imam, disclosed this in Minna on Thursday while briefing newsmen on the level of preparedness for the November 1st local government elections in the state.

No fewer than 250 chairmanship candidates from 10 political parties are vying for the 25 local government council seats in the state.

Also, 2,742 candidates from the 10 political parties will contest for the counsellorship positions for the 274 wards across the 25 local government areas of the state.

All the agents of the ten political parties contesting the Saturday elections were present at the final distribution of sensitive materials at the NSIEC headquarters in Minna, the state capital, on Thursday, including security agents and other critical stakeholders.

Engr Jibrin Imam disclosed that earlier all the non-sensitive materials had been duly delivered to the 25 local government electoral officers (EOs) while the distribution of sensitive materials would be concluded today (Thursday), two days to the election to avoid any unforeseen problems.

He stated further that all arrangements have been concluded by the commission for hitch-free elections in the 4,950 polling units in 274 wards of the 25 local government areas.

He urged all the political actors, especially the political parties participating in the elections, to adhere strictly to the electoral guidelines, assuring that the state electoral body would ensure a level playing ground for all. While warning that the electoral law and guidelines would be fully applied where necessary, the commission remains open to listen to and entertain any complaints.

Jibrin Imam, however, appreciated the political parties and their supporters for cooperation so far, urged them to sustain the tempo in order to achieve a credible, peaceful and crisis-free local government elections in the state.
