From John Adams, Minna

Niger State Governor Umar Mohammed Bago has announced that the state government is seeking approval from the Federal Ministry of Works to reconstruct the Lapai-Gulu-Muye Federal Road and construct the access road to the abandoned Baro Port in Katcha Local Government Area.

Governor Bago made this announcement during the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of township roads in Lapai Local Government Area. He emphasised that these road projects, funded through the FIRS/NNPC tax credit scheme, demonstrate his administration’s commitment to transforming road infrastructure across the state.

The Governor reiterated his stance on the importance of road infrastructure for achieving his “New Niger” agenda, stating that all roads in the state, including federal roads, will receive attention. He also highlighted the recent flag-off of the 90km Bida-Zungeru road construction, another project undertaken by the FIRS/NNPC under the tax credit scheme.

In addition to road infrastructure development, Governor Bago announced plans to renovate the General Hospitals in Lapai and Agaie. He also mentioned the revival of the Lapai water project, which was initially awarded by former Governor Abdulkadir Abdullahi Kure but later abandoned by the administration of former Governor Babangida Aliyu.

The Governor encouraged residents to embrace mechanised agriculture, stating that the government would provide the necessary support for their benefit. He also addressed the Baro Port, which has been abandoned, and announced plans to construct the access road leading to the port for the benefit of the surrounding community.

Local government chairmen, Alhaji Mohammed Musa Kirikpo of Lapai and Alhaji Ibrahim Sayuti Aliyu of Agaie, expressed their gratitude to the Governor for extending infrastructural development to their areas and requested further development initiatives.

The Emirs of Agaie and Lapai commended Governor Bago for his efforts in transforming the state and pledged their continued support.

Consultants and contractors involved in the road projects assured the Governor of their commitment to delivering high-quality projects with proper drainage and strict supervision.
