The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) has hailed appointment of the Chairman of National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) by the Federal Government.
It however urged the government to do same for other government’s agencies and parastatals.
Director General of NECA, Adewale-Smatt Oyerinde stated that the success of any scheme or project depends on a good governance structure.
“The appointment of a substantive Chairman for the NHIA will not only strengthen the Institution but also reposition it to achieve its objectives,” he said.
While calling for the appointment and constitution of the Boards of many other Agencies, the NECA DG emphasised that it would not only be necessary but fostered development and deliverable of the agencies core responsibilities.
“We call on the Federal Government to expeditiously appoint Chairmen for other critical Institutions like PenCom, NDE, etc, in line with the Agencies’ enabling Acts, he said .
Oyerinde noted that the managements of the Agencies cannot substitute for Governing Bodies and as such, the enabling Acts detailed the independent and complementary roles of the Boards and Management.
“Beyond the inauguration of the Boards, there should also be strategic mechanisms to ensure that the Boards function as envisaged by the Acts, rather than becoming a rubber-stamp for the Management,” he said.
