Touched by the condition under which students in Nsulu public secondary schools, in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government of Area of Abia State study, a Non Governmental Organization (NGO) Benneth Emeruwa Foundation (BEF) has set out to mitigate the problems of the pupils in these schools.

The schools are Umuakwu Nsulu Secondary School, Ohuhu Nsulu and Umunna Nsulu Secondary Schools.

In this wise, the NGO recently donated some educational materials to students of the said schools. The items included school bags, text and exercise books, biros among others.

Speaking while handing over the items to the principals of the schools, the Foundation’s founder, Bennett Emeruwa said as a non-profit, non-governmental charity organization, one of BEF’s missions was to empower the next generation through grass root education of the African child.

Emeruwa disclosed that it was in this direction that drives the foundation’s commitment in providing schools with teaching aids, and students, assistance packs which includes scholarships, writing materials, school uniforms, writing desks, waste bins, books, and other supplies.

Worried by what he saw during the foundation’s visit to the schools that some of the students did not wear school uniform to school and others came to school bare-footed, BEF promised to donate 100 school uniforms and sandals to help out the students.

“We have been doing this since 2018 across Nigeria, our hope is that our little efforts will touch an African child’s life and encourage them to stay in school despite the challenging economic situation of African societies.

“We noticed lots of challenges in the public schools we donated the aids to and on some of those needs, we have promised to donate 100 school uniforms and footwear (sandals) to help students who we saw not having uniforms nor footwear.”

Outside the donated items made and the ones promised to come the way of the students soon, Emeruwa, unhappy with what he saw in the schools visited, in the area of shortage of teachers, promised to write the Commissioner for Education in Abia state to send more teachers to the schools.

“We are going to write the commissioner for education in Abia concerning shortage of teachers in the schools we visited and noticed an alarming shortage of secondary school teachers.”

Sounding optimistic of every African child having education, Emeruwa said, “There have been efforts made so far towards educating the African child, but so much is still needed to be done in this direction, starting from the grass root.”.

Responding, the principals of the schools expressed delight over the benevolence of the NGO.

Lechi Obike, Principal of Umuakwu Nsulu Secondary School said, “I am so happy that this is happening in my time as principal, as an indigene of Umuakwu. I pray he will go higher; in fact he has motivated me to be more charitable. So I thank him and I thank his foundation.”

The Principal of Ohuhu Nsulu Secondary School, Mrs. Ezinne Agemu Chinyere described the donations made by the NGO as “very nice”, adding, “it is always good when you’ve made it in life, you come back home and touch the lives of the down trodden in the society.

‘We expect this from other wealthy men from the community. I always ask them that they should come and do something for these students so that they will know that it is important to go to school.”

Equally speaking, the Vice Principal, Umunna Nsulu Secondary School, Mrs. C. A. Eluwa commended BEF for donating educational materials to students of her school.

“I’m overwhelmed about the donations made to the students, we have not seen this kind before and this is my first time of seeing it and we say may God bless you for remembering us in Jesus name.”

The students of the three schools were equally happy about the donations, which they said have lessened the burden of procuring those materials on their parents.
