The newly elected chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, Hassan Ajibola Fatai, has pledged to prioritise teachers’ welfare and uphold professionalism in the teaching profession.
He emerged alongside other executive members elected to pilot the affairs of the union for the next four years at the eighth quadrennial delegates conference of the union, held in Ibadan.
Fatai, in his acceptance speech, promised to work closely with members and stakeholders to reposition the union for effective service delivery and improved welfare for teachers across the state.
The new chairman, who teaches at Migrant Farmers Primary School, Igbo-Iroko, Kishi, also promised to protect the dignity, integrity and professional standards of teachers in the state.
Earlier, the National President of the NUT, Titus Audu Amba, who was represented by the National Social Secretary, Titi Ade Adebanjo, reaffirmed the union’s commitment to democratic principles and improved working conditions for teachers nationwide.
He said elections at all levels of the union formed part of its constitutional process, aimed at ensuring continuity in leadership.
The immediate past chairman of the union in the state, Oladimeji Raji, while presenting his stewardship report, listed achievements recorded between 2022 and 2026.
According to him, the union secured prompt payment of salaries, promotion arrears and annual increments, while also intervening in pension matters and cases involving wrongful postings, salary stoppage and victimisation of teachers.
He added that sustained advocacy by the union facilitated the recruitment of additional teachers and non-teaching staff, thereby easing workloads and improving teacher-pupil ratios in schools.
Raji also listed projects completed during the period to include renovation of the state secretariat, establishment of NUT Model Schools, construction of classrooms, expansion of the NUT Resource Centre and development of an Olympic-size sports complex.
Other elected executive members included Adeleke Adesina as deputy chairman, and Alonge Oluyemisi as first vice chairman.
