From Stanley Uzoaru, Owerri
The Imo State Government has assured that the Nekede zoological Garden relocated to Eziama in Ikeduru Local Government Area would compete favourably with other wildlife centres in the world when completed.
Commissioner for Tourism, Hospitality and Culture, Chief Jerry Egemba, who revealed this to journalists in Owerri while being honoured for his “societal development and media friendliness” by a group of journalists under the aegis of the Media for Truth and Development (MTD) also assured that the zoo project would be completed in April, 2026.
Contrary to claims by former General Manager of the zoo, Segun Abioye that the animals had been sold, the Commissioner disclosed that all the animals were relocated to Jos zoo.
“I assure you in the next seven months, the zoo project at Eziama Ikeduru would be completed and all the animals which are presently cooling off at Jos zoo would be brought back.

Revealing reasons for the relocation of the zoo to Ikeduru from Nekede, Egemba said: “What they would not tell you is that the zoo has been encroached upon, people building houses around the zoo which has made expansion of the place impossible.”
Egemba also disclosed the completion date for the ongoing renovation of Imo Concord Hotel which he said would be in December.
On the dredging of the Nworie River, he said the project will enhance the economic growth of the State.
“We have stopped the excavation of sand at Nworie River because of the dredging, if the project is completed it will not only give jobs to the youth but will also help in boosting the drainage system in the State.
“I’m a great admirer of Governor Hope Uzodimma, he’s a silent achiever who doesn’t make noise, he has approved the construction of these projects and 50 percent of the contract paid when these projects like the Concord Hotel is completed Internernally Generated Revenue (IGR) will provide more funds for development,” Egemba said.
