From Molly Kilete, Abuja
The newly appointed Minster of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Retd), has assumed office with a promise to focus on welfare, administration, and strategic direction.
Musa, the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), has also promised to steer the Defence ministry on three pillars namely -operational effectiveness, unified action, and strategic foresight.
The minister, who made this known when he assumed office at the Ship House in Abuja, on Friday, reaffirmed his commitment to lead with fairness, firmness, and fidelity to the constitution.
Gen. Musa, who said the ministry under his leadership will be a powerhouse of strategic direction, enabling support and ensuring accountability, thanked President Tinubu for his appointment and said he will kick start his duty with a rigorous review of all theatre commands and inter-service operations and promised to reward those who excel in their duties.
While noting the sacrifices of troops to keep Nigeria one and united, the minister said: “Our troops are out there – day and night, in rain and storm, risking everything so that Nigerians can sleep in peace. We must support them, pray for them, and work with other MDAs to ensure they succeed. Mr President has assured us of his full support, and he expects results. Therefore, in the coming weeks, we must demonstrate renewed commitment from within the ministry and across all theatres of operation.
“We will begin with a rigorous review of all theatre commands and inter-service operations. My door will remain open for frank discussions on equipment, training, welfare, and strategy.
“We must also confront a critical truth: welfare is not administrative; it is strategic. Morale is a force multiplier. Our personnel must receive their kits on time. Their operational allowances must be paid promptly,” he said.
