You recently had a seven-hour leadership immersion session. What was the aim behind the programme?

The seven-hour leadership immersion programme was to accelerate the leadership competence workshop in its fourth stream, with over 160 senior leaders across industries experiencing the transformative experience. We designed it with a specific purpose in mind: to provide a comprehensive and intensive learning experience for professionals seeking to enhance their leadership skills. The duration allows for a deep dive into various aspects of leadership, fostering a more immersive and transformative experience. The goal for me is to always go beyond surface-level insights and facilitate a meaningful exploration of leadership principles, strategies, and practical applications, and the results have been mind blowing. Our intention has always been to bridge the leadership gap, which is a major component in the wheel for a lot of professionals and organizations. During this programme, participants engage in a series of discussions, and experiential activities aimed at honing their leadership abilities. The immersive nature of the programme enhances the likelihood of sustained learning and application in real-world leadership scenarios.

How did you become a leadership development expert? Was there a role model who pushed you forward?

My journey as a leadership development strategist was shaped by a combination of education, experience, and mentorship. While there might not have been a single role model pushing me forward, I drew inspiration from various leaders and educators who demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities. Over time, I developed a passion for helping others unlock their leadership potential and navigate the complexities of organizational leadership. This passion, combined with a commitment to continuous learning, led me to specialize in leadership development and strategy. One of those role models is Mrs Mavi Isibor of Poise Finishing School. As an intern with Poise, she exposed me to the world of personal and professional development and I was amazed by how much peoples’ lives could be transformed.  This really pushed me to explore more in the field. I also had the privilege of working across multiple business sectors, including banking, oil and gas as well as consulting. With each experience I saw how imperative leadership development was, especially for human and business success. Moving on, I pursued relevant academic and professional qualifications, such as degrees in leadership and organizational development, including an MBA in Management Consultancy and other certifications to build a solid foundation. I would also say that practical experience in leadership roles within previous organizations allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations. Additionally, I sought out mentors, individuals who had achieved success in the field of leadership development to guide and inspire me.

Most leadership strategists work behind the scenes. What exactly does the role entail?

Leadership strategists play a crucial role in guiding individuals and organizations toward effective leadership practices, and while we work behind the scenes deploying interventions, in some other times, we are right in the middle of the scenes.  The responsibilities of a leadership strategist entail conducting assessments to identify leadership strengths and areas for development within individuals and teams; designing and implementing leadership development programmes tailored to the specific needs of an organization; facilitating workshops and training sessions to impart leadership skills; communication techniques, and problem-solving abilities. Again, it entails providing one-on-one coaching to leaders as well as offering guidance on personal and professional development. It is also the function of a leadership strategist to assist organizations in navigating leadership transitions and implementing strategic changes while staying abreast of current leadership trends, research, and best practices to inform strategic decision-making.

As one of the women who have broken through the glass ceiling, have you experienced chauvinism while climbing the corporate leadership ladder?

Breaking through glass ceilings often involves overcoming various challenges, including gender bias. While it is true that chauvinism can be encountered on the path to professional growth, the focus should remain on skills, competence, and the ability to lead effectively. My approach has always been to let my accomplishments speak for themselves, demonstrating that leadership knows no gender boundaries. So, yes, I have experienced chauvinism, and sometimes still do. I remember meeting the chief executive of an organization once, and he passed a comment casually asking if women can teach about leadership. But as I always say, enough of playing the gender card, women should play more of the value card. Overcoming chauvinism requires resilience, assertiveness, and the ability to challenge stereotypes. It is essential to ensure diversity and inclusion, fostering an environment where individuals are recognized for their contributions rather than their gender.

What has been your highest point in life?

One of the highest points in my life has been witnessing the positive impact of my leadership development programmes on individuals and organizations. Seeing leaders grow, teams flourish, and witnessing the tangible results of effective leadership strategies has been immensely rewarding. Contributing to the success and growth of others is a fulfilling aspect of being a leadership development strategist.

What about the low moments?

Like anyone else, I have faced challenges and setbacks. There have been moments of self-doubt and periods where goals seemed distant. One of those lowest moments for me was when I had to shut my business after two years because we were not doing so well. However, that low moment served as opportunity for reflection, learning, and personal growth. It taught me resilience, the importance of adaptability, and the need to persevere in the face of adversity. Look at where I am today. So, even low moments are packaged with some hidden blessings.

What was it like growing up? Take us through the schools you attended, your parents, siblings and marriage?

My formative years were shaped by a supportive family environment. I attended Lagos State Model College, Kankon, Badagry, where I developed a strong educational foundation for my secondary education. I moved on to University of Ibadan for my undergraduate studies in Education and Economics and also went on to bag a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of Wales, Cardiff, United Kingdom. My parents instilled in me the values of hard work, integrity, and continuous learning. Growing up with my siblings provided a sense of camaraderie and mutual support. I have been married for over 14 years now to the most supportive, responsible and caring man ever and my marriage is blessed with two phenomenal kids.

If you were not a leadership strategist, what would you have loved to be?

I would have been an actress. I am a natural talent, I can tell you that confidently.

What do you think leaders should adopt as possible solution to the present economic chaos being experienced in the country?

From a personal responsibility and survival standpoint in the face of Nigeria’s economic turmoil, leaders must adopt a proactive and adaptive mindset to weather the storm. The challenges at hand demand a combination of resilience, resourcefulness, and strategic planning. Firstly, financial prudence becomes paramount. Individuals should meticulously review their budgets, identifying areas where expenses can be trimmed without compromising essential needs. This might involve cutting down on non-essential purchases, renegotiating contracts, and exploring cost-effective alternatives. Diversifying income streams can serve as a protective measure. Relying solely on one source of income may leave individuals vulnerable in times of economic instability. Also, exploring additional avenues such as freelancing, part-time work, or entrepreneurship can provide a safety net and enhance financial stability. Investing in personal skills and education is another crucial aspect of individual survival while acquiring new skills or enhancing existing ones can increase employability and open doors to diverse opportunities. Continuous learning and adaptability are key assets in navigating the dynamic job market. There again, health and well-being should not be overlooked. The stress associated with economic uncertainties can take a toll on physical and mental health. Therefore, prioritizing self-care, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and seeking support when needed contribute to overall resilience in the face of adversity.

What advice would you give to the younger people, Generation Z, ones, seeing the level of decadence in the society?

To the younger generation experiencing the rot, my advice is to focus on their education and continuous learning to build a strong foundation for your future. Among other things, they should not be pressured into alliances to make quick money. Look for positive role models and learn from them because their future is bright and a lot of huge opportunities await them. Therefore, do not miss your turn; instead dream big because your aspirations matter. They should work diligently, stay focused, and believe in the power of their dreams to shape their destiny.
