Nestlé Nigeria has joined forces with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation to launch a National Water Quality Advocacy Campaign in a move to improve public health across the country. The initiative aims to address the urgent need for safe drinking water, which remains a critical factor in the fight against preventable diseases such as cholera and diarrhea.

The company disclosed in a statement that by prioritizing water safety, the government and Nestlé Nigeria are working together to reduce waterborne illnesses and promote overall community well being.

Minister, Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, emphasized the vital role of water quality in safeguarding public health. He welcomed the partnership, describing it as timely and impactful in addressing both immediate health threats and long-term environmental challenges such as flooding and climate resilience.

“The Ministry is committed to working with Nestlé Nigeria to improve water quality across the country. This partnership is in line with our mission to ensure safe water access and support the health and well-being of all Nigerians,” the Minister stated.

Nestle Corporate Communications, Public Affairs and Sustainability Lead, Victoria Uwadoka, said: “Water is essential to life, yet millions of Nigerians remain at risk due to unsafe water sources. Our campaign is not just about raising awareness, it’s about shifting behaviors and building partnerships that deliver lasting impact.”

“The campaign is built on three key pillars: raising awareness and knowledge, engaging stakeholders at all levels, and promoting sustainable, long-term solutions to water safety. These efforts are designed to close the knowledge gap around water quality and support national health outcomes through informed and coordinated action.”

National Coordinator, Organised Private Sector in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (OPS-WASH), Dr. Nicholas Igwe, noted that 16 communities in Abaji Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory and eight in Agbara, Ogun State, would directly benefit from targeted water quality interventions. Additionally, two agricultural communities are set to receive water-harvesting systems to support irrigation and enhance food security.

“With backing from senior government officials and private sector partners, the campaign represents a united front in tackling one of Nigeria’s most persistent public health challenges. By ensuring safer water for communities nationwide, the initiative aims to not only reduce disease but also create a healthier, more resilient population.”
