The Nigeria Conservation Foundation has called for greater collaboration to end the destruction to biodiversity in Cross River State.

Emmanuel Owan, the head of Calabar office of the NCF disclosed this in a message to mark this year’s International Day For biodiversity.

He said this is necessary to avoid catastrophic dangers that occurs as a result of climate change.

“In order to encourage ecosystem diversity, we in the NCF are calling collaboration among stakeholders especially in Cross River State where forest is disappearing at at alarming rate through such activities like illegal logging, unsustainable agric practices, introduction of invasive species, mining especially within the National Park and other forest reserve as well as community forests across the state.

“It is imperative for all to get involved in the protection and conservation of these life forms to avert catastrophic dangers as a result of climate change, given rise to droughts, flood, food insecurity, communal crisis, increase intensity of heat, and other diseases associated with extreme weather conditions.

“To this end, we are calling all stakeholders to join hands together to support local, regional and global efforts in the fight against biodiversity and habitat destruction” he said.

The International Day for Biodiversity 2024 with the theme: “Be part of the Plan”, is a call to action for all stakeholders to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity by supporting the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, also referred to as the Biodiversity Plan.

Cross River State hosts one of the oldest rainforests in Africa and has been identified as a biodiversity hotspot.

However, this has been increasingly threatened by activities of illegal loggers and miners in recent years.
