The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has declared that the Nigerian Navy is ready to ensure full protection of Nigeria’s oil resources.
This is just as he assured that the welfare of personnel serving in the Niger Delta region is a top priority.
Abbas stated this yesterday in Yenagoa, during his inaugural familiarization visit to the Joint Task Force, Operation Delta Safe, Headquarters, South-South and the Central Naval Command (CNC) of the Nigerian Navy.
Addressing officers and ratings, the CNS stressed the strategic importance of the Navy’s role in safeguarding the country’s oil resources.
He commended the JTF and the CNC on the discharge of duties at their Area of Responsibilities (AOR), stressing that the Navy is ready to collaborate with others to protect the maritime environment.
“We need harmonious collaboration because we cannot do it alone. Whatever security we are facing, the role of society approaches it.
“I can assure you we are working with those who are ready to work with us in harmony towards achieving the same goal to make our waterway crime-free.
“Thus, boosting our economy as we rely on the resources we have in our maritime environment, particularly in the Niger Delta.
“We are all aware that the nation relies on our oil resources. And where are these resources? Mostly within the waters. And we are the custodians of that maritime environment,” he said.

In his address, the Commander of Operation Delta Safe, Rear Adm. Oladipo Fahad, said that the joint task force is dedicated to securing the Niger Delta’s oil infrastructure.
He said that the visit of the CNS underscored the unwavering commitment of the Nigerian Navy and the collective efforts of the armed forces of Nigeria.
In ensuring the security of the vital oil and gas infrastructure that sustains our nation’s economy and regional stability.
“Operation Delta Safe activated with a clear and resolute mandate to protect critical infrastructure like oil and gas, deter criminal elements, including oil thieves.
“Pipeline vandalism, militancy, as well as an environment conducive to peace, sustainable economic development, and social stability across the Niger Delta.
“ In pursuit of this objective, we have adopted a comprehensive, intelligent, driven, and tactical approach that emphasizes partnership, community engagement, and rigorous security patrols.
“Over the course of our operation, we have seen notable progress in ensuring confidence amongst stakeholders, destroying criminal networks in safeguarding critical infrastructure,” he said.
The JTF Commander said efforts with sister services, law enforcement agencies, and local communities have been instrumental in achieving the case.
