The inauguration of the Oyo State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Tour Operators (NATOP) in Ibadan has been described by industry stakeholders as a significant step towards strengthening tourism advocacy and professional collaboration in South West Nigeria.

The event, held on May 21, 2026, marked the first state chapter inauguration undertaken by NATOP’s South West Zone, a milestone officials say reflects the association’s growing efforts to deepen its presence across the region.

Leading the inauguration were NATOP National President, Bolaji Mustapha, and South West Vice President, Anago Osho, alongside tourism operators and stakeholders from within and outside Oyo State.

For many participants, the launch represented more than the creation of another professional body. It symbolised a renewed commitment to promoting tourism as a driver of economic growth, job creation and cultural preservation.

Speaking after the inauguration, Osho described the event as a landmark achievement for the South West Zone.

“This milestone marks the first inauguration of its kind in the history of the association and stands as a remarkable achievement for NATOP South West Zone,” he said.

According to him, the success of the initiative was made possible through the support and cooperation of the association’s national leadership.

“This success would not have been possible without the encouragement, cooperation and unwavering support of our National President, Hajia Bolaji Mustapha. I sincerely thank her for her visionary leadership and steadfast commitment to the growth of NATOP,” Osho stated.

Industry analysts say the establishment of the Oyo chapter comes at a time when states are increasingly looking to tourism as a viable avenue for economic diversification. Oyo State, with its rich cultural heritage, historical landmarks and hospitality assets, is regarded as one of the key tourism destinations in the South West.

Stakeholders believe the new chapter will provide a platform for stronger collaboration among tour operators while helping to promote local attractions and improve industry standards.

Reflecting on the collaborative effort that led to the inauguration, Osho acknowledged several individuals whose contributions helped bring the project to fruition.

“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Tunji Akib, Welfare Director of NATOP South West Zone, and Mrs. Doris Godson, Lagos State Coordinator, for their dedication and support throughout the process,” he said.

He also singled out tourism entrepreneur Ayo of Flyzone Tourism for special recognition.

“Special appreciation goes to Mr. Ayo of Flyzone Tourism for his immense contribution towards the success of the event,” he added.

The NATOP South West Vice President further acknowledged the support of the zone’s Membership Secretary, Tobiloba Bamisaye, tourism stakeholder Taiwo Mufuliat Omokunmi, and Michael Balogun for their encouragement during the process.

The event was hosted at Mahogany Hotel and Suites, where members of the tourism community gathered to witness what many described as a historic moment for the association.

Beyond the ceremony itself, the inauguration underscored the increasing role professional associations are expected to play in promoting domestic tourism and supporting tourism-related businesses across Nigeria.

As stakeholders departed from Ibadan, many expressed optimism that the Oyo chapter would serve as a catalyst for greater industry engagement and destination promotion within the state and the wider South West region.

For NATOP, the inauguration was not merely the establishment of a new chapter; it was a signal of the association’s determination to strengthen its grassroots presence and contribute more actively to the growth of Nigeria’s tourism industry.
