With less than two weeks until the June 20 Nasarawa North Senatorial District by-election, political activities have intensified across the constituency as candidates and their supporters embark on aggressive grassroots mobilisation to secure votes.

Among those leading the campaign charge is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Rt Hon. Dr David Emmanuel Ombugadu, whose consultations and ward-to-ward engagements have continued to attract large crowds across the senatorial district.

In the latest phase of his campaign tour, Ombugadu visited Igga Wagibi, Kagbu, Buruburum and Mada Station, where he received enthusiastic receptions from party faithful, community leaders, youth and women’s groups who pledged their support for his senatorial ambition.

Addressing supporters at various campaign stops on Sunday, Ombugadu described his aspiration as a continuation of the developmental vision and people-orientated leadership of the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki, whose death created the vacancy that necessitated the by-election.

“Our mission is to sustain and expand the legacy of service, empowerment and development left behind by the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki. The people deserve quality representation that will bring development closer to the grassroots and ensure that their voices are heard at the National Assembly,” Ombugadu said.

The former governorship candidate assured constituents that, if elected, he would focus on effective representation, youth and women’s empowerment, education, healthcare and infrastructure development across the five local government areas that make up the district.

According to him, leadership must remain accountable to the people and responsive to their needs, stressing that his campaign is built around inclusivity, accessibility and service delivery.

“We can achieve greater progress when we work together. This election is about the future of our people, and I remain committed to providing representation that will attract opportunities and development to every community in Nasarawa North,” he stated.

Community stakeholders who spoke during the visits commended Ombugadu’s grassroots approach and his consistent engagement with the electorate, assuring him of their support ahead of the poll.

The 20 June by-election is expected to be keenly contested, with candidates from major political parties intensifying campaigns across the district. Political analysts believe voter turnout, grassroots structures and the ability of candidates to connect with local communities will play crucial roles in determining the outcome.

With more than 300,000 registered voters expected to cast their ballots across 583 polling units spread across Akwanga, Wamba, Nasarawa Eggon, Nassarawa Local Government and Toto Local Government Areas, the election is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched political contests in Nasarawa State this year.

The Sun reports that beyond the contest for a Senate seat, the election is widely viewed as a referendum on political influence, party strength and grassroots acceptance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
