Nasarawa State First Lady Hajiya Silifat Sule has urged women in the state to leverage technology to boost their income instead of using it to engage in social vices.

The Governor’s wife made the call on Tuesday during a symposium organised by the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development to mark the 2023 International Women’s Day.

Sule, represented by Tosin Akabe, the Deputy Governor’s wife, noted that technology has widened opportunities for women to engage in commerce, and learn various trades and skills, including cooking. She also encouraged them to use social media platforms to showcase their products and obtain useful advice on how to improve their lives.

Sule lamented that some women were using technology negatively, committing vices that are inimical to their religious beliefs and the growth of society. She, therefore, called on women to use technology positively and change the narrative of their lives for good.

In her remarks, Hajiya Aisha Rufai-Ibrahim, the Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, stated that the ministry would continue to expose women to the opportunities that abound in technology to make their lives worthwhile. She added that the state government trained 100 women in digital technology in 2022 and planned to train another set in 2023.

The Commissioner also noted that the government trained women in fish production, animal house boundary, and technology-based cooking, and empowered many with different skills to add value to their lives.

Rufai-Ibrahim encouraged women to actively participate in politics to get their rightful place in human development, commending Governor Sule for being women-friendly and giving many women opportunities to serve in his cabinet and head other Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

She urged women in the state to vote for the governor again in the March 18 elections to enable him to consolidate and continue the good work he has been doing in the last four years.

Daily Sun Reports that the occasion featured goodwill messages from women who had breakthroughs in various sectors and paper presentations by resource persons. The theme of the celebration was ‘Digital, Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality.’
