Canadian-based Nigerian rapper, Selick Idahosa aka Sleek has opened up on how his father contributed to his love for music.
The talented rapper disclosed this in a recent chat with daily sun, while sharing how he began his journey into music and why he choose to rap, the Edo State-born artist said “Funny enough my Dad is the main reason why I love music so much, he was so into everything he would have binders full of every album (literally, whatever was blowing up during 1999 – 2005 so I would take his cd’s and memorize the lyrics as much as I could. It was until Gr 12 Highschool in 2008 I decided to take on the art of rapping, most of my peers were also rapping which kind of helped push me to even attempt in the first place. Growing up rappers were like superheroes to us because of all the flashy things they would show in their music videos like the sports cars and mansions, yes it is just rap/hip hop that I make but I also try to add as much melody as I can and I love to experiment with my sound”, he said.
Sleek rapping talent first emerged when he began free-styling to mainstream hits in high school and his peers realized his ability to deliver high-impact rap verses with a laidback flow, the rising star has several songs which include ‘Feel the vibe’, ‘The Plug’, ‘Proceed with caution’, ‘Find me’ among others in his catalog.
The budding act who is gearing up to take the Nigerian rap music space by storm in the coming months however spoke on challenges upcoming acts face in the music space, he said “There are so many challenges as an independent artist, music is a very expensive industry. Beats, music videos, public relations, collaborations are all very expensive and even more expensive if you don’t have any proper connections”, he noted.
