Ukraine used at least 14 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to conduct a massive drone attack on Moscow and the surrounding areas in the early morning hours of Tuesday.
The attack resulted in damage to several apartment buildings, causing one fatality and multiple injuries, as confirmed by Moscow Region Governor Andrey Vorobyov.
“The evacuated residents have been placed in temporary accommodation at a recreation centre,” stated Vorobyov, adding that they were also provided with hot meals. A 46-year-old woman lost her life, and three individuals, including a child, were hospitalised. One UAV struck a building on Vysokovoltnaya Street, damaging a 9th-floor apartment and injuring at least one person.
At least 14 drones were detected and intercepted in several districts of the Moscow Region, including Podolsk, Ramenskoye, Lyubertsy, Domodedovo, and Kolomna, according to reports from Vorobyov and Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin.
Sobyanin detailed the interceptions on Telegram, starting with the first UAV in Lyubertsy around 2:30 am on Tuesday. He subsequently reported two more drones downed in Ramensky, followed by four in Podolsk and two in Domodedovo. Several more were intercepted over Ramensky in the ensuing hours. Sobyanin noted that falling debris from these interceptions did not cause casualties or damage.
At the Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Zhukovsky airports in Moscow, the drone incursion resulted in flight delays. The extent of the attack has not been confirmed by the Russian Defence Ministry, but according to Governor Aleksandr Bogomaz, at least 59 drones were shot down or intercepted over the Bryansk Region alone.
This incident follows a large-scale drone attack on September 1, where the Defence Ministry reported 158 drones intercepted or shot down across Russian territory, including seven over the Moscow Region and two above Moscow itself.
