Mortgage reform key to sustainable living – Okonkwo

…As firm urges government to adopt functional system to tackle housing deficit

Group Managing Director of Nedcomoaks Limited, Dr. Kennedy Okonkwo, has urged the Federal Government to adopt a workable mortgage system as a lasting solution to Nigeria’s housing challenges and to redefine sustainable living for millions of citizens.

Speaking at the Handover Ceremony of Keys for the company’s Dream to Keys project in Lagos, Okonkwo stressed that affordability — not the availability of houses — remains the greatest barrier to home ownership in the country.

“Our major problem as a nation is not a shortage of houses but the inability of average Nigerians to afford them. If a functional mortgage system is put in place and effectively implemented, the housing deficit will shrink drastically,” he stated.

Okonkwo, a trailblazing property developer renowned for his Victoria Crest Homes brand, has continued to champion affordable and eco-friendly housing through his revolutionary Citadel View Estates 1.0 and 2.0—Nigeria’s first fully solar-powered residential communities.

He explained that the Citadel View initiative was born out of the energy crisis that deepened during the COVID-19 lockdown. Rising energy costs and unreliable power supply, he said, inspired his vision to develop homes that generate their own power through solar energy, drastically reducing residents’ dependence on the national grid.

“During the pandemic, we asked ourselves, what if homes could power themselves? That simple question gave birth to a movement,” he said. “Today, that dream has become a reality—proof that sustainability can go hand in hand with comfort and affordability.”

Since the completion of Citadel 1.0, which sold out within a year, and the successful handover of Citadel 2.0 in 2023, Nedcomoaks has continued to expand its green footprint with Citadel 1.0 Phase B currently under construction. The project incorporates cutting-edge solar systems that guarantee 24-hour power supply—ushering in a new era of energy independence and comfort.

Beyond providing homes, Okonkwo said the Citadel View brand is about building happy, peaceful, and eco-conscious communities. “Our estates are not just about bricks and solar panels; they’re about creating environments where residents experience tranquility and peace of mind. No noisy generators, no blackouts—just clean, consistent energy,” he said.

The ripple effect of the Citadel initiative has been profound, inspiring other developers and homeowners across Nigeria to embrace renewable energy solutions. Residents enjoy lower electricity bills, better air quality, and a stronger sense of self-sufficiency—key ingredients for sustainable urban living.

Okonkwo also highlighted the environmental benefits of solar-powered communities, saying they align with Nigeria’s climate commitments and contribute to global carbon reduction goals. “Sustainable housing is the future,” he affirmed. “It’s good for the planet, for our pockets, and for our peace of mind.”

As Nigeria marks another year of independence, Okonkwo believes true freedom begins with energy and housing independence. “When you give a man a good roof over his head, you give him the foundation to chase his dreams,” he said.

With visionaries like Dr. Kennedy Okonkwo leading the charge, Citadel View stands as a beacon of what is possible when innovation meets sustainability—a model for a greener, more affordable, and energy-secure Nigeria.

“The future,” Okonkwo concluded, “is solar, sustainable, and within our reach.”
