World’s richest man, Elon Musk on Wednesday night sparked an online debate by validating the popular adage – money can’t buy happiness.

Musk wrote, “Whoever said ‘money can’t buy happiness’ really knew what they were talking about .”

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO, known for his candid online musings, shared the sentiment amid speculations that it signalled personal challenges despite his stupendous wealth.

The post, which gained over 33 million views and 245,000 likes within hours, prompted heated discourse on the role financial security plays in well-being.

Many Nigerians who reacted to the X owner’s remark drew a contrast to Afrobeat singer Adekunle Gold’s take on the matter.

In his 2021 track, “It Is What It Is,” Adekunle Gold sang, “Money no dey bring happiness oh / Na when I get money I realise oh.”

Like Elon Musk’s post, the song, which is part of the Nigerian singer’s Afro Pop Vol. 1 album, indicated wealth hardly guaranteed fulfillment, a realisation Gold has discussed in interviews as stemming from his own experiences with success.

However, opinions remain divided on the subject matter.

Some users agreed wholeheartedly, with one replying, “Very true, money doesn’t buy happiness, but it makes misery a lot more comfortable!”

Others pushed back, emphasising poverty’s toll. A prominent response noted, “Being broke while watching your mates win will buy you depression, envy, and sleepless nights for free,” arguing that financial struggles breed unhappiness.

Another user quipped, “Only $1m will make my smile for 20 years straight,” questioning Musk’s perspective from his position of immense wealth.

Faith-based responses also emerged, with comments like “Money answers all things but Jesus gives true happiness, fulfillment and satisfaction.”
