Minister tasks state govts, LG bosses on digital economy

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has tasked state and local governments council chairmen to embrace new innovations and technology in order to develop an economy that is truly digitised.

Tijani spoke  in Jos, on Monday, at the opening ceremony of the 13th regular meeting of the National council on communications innovation and digital economy.

He said, “The future is digital, but it must be inclusive and sustainable.”

The minister, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, Engr. Nadungu Gagare,  thanked Plateau state government for hosting the meeting.

According to him, “Sustainable growth in the digital era requires trust in digital platforms, support for home-grown innovation, and an enabling regulatory environment.”

“The challenges in accelerating inclusive digital transformation are real, but they are not insurmountable. With bold policies, sustained investment, and strong partnerships.”

Plateau state commissioner Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Cletus Bako Shurkuk who declared the five-day meeting opened, appealed to participants to discuss deep and be opened for other participants to learn from their innovations skills.

Shurkuk said that the Plateau state government has done very well in the technological innovation subsector sector.

“We are expanding broadband and digital connectivity, strengthening ICT infrastructure across urban and rural communities, supporting innovation hubs and youth-led tech initiatives, enhancing digital skills to empower civil servants, students, entrepreneurs, and the wider public. These efforts reflect our belief that innovation and technology are powerful tools for inclusive growth, job creation, and economic prosperity.”

“This year’s theme reminds us that innovation is not only about technology, but also about equitable access, empowered communities, and creating opportunities for every citizen to contribute to national development. Nigeria’s progress depends on how effectively we harness digital tools for governance, commerce, education, healthcare, and security.”

The  meeting drew participants across the 36 states of the Federation including staff of the federal ministry of Communications innovation and digital economy and security operatives.
