Military troops on a counterterrorism operation in the Northeast said they arrested a suspected major supplier of cannabis and other illicit drugs to Boko Haram in Adamawa and Borno states.
Spokesman of the military Joint Task Force Northeast Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), Lt. Col Sani Uba, in a statement at the weekend, said the suspected key supplier of drugs to Boko Haram, 45-years old Zubairu Muhammed, was arrested on Thursday at Uba, a town on the local border of Borno and Adamant states.
“The suspect is believed to be a major distributor of cannabis sativa and “ice” substances to terrorists across Askira-Uba, Chibok, Michika, and Damboa areas of Adamawa and Borno States,” the spokesperson disclosed.
He explained the arrest was carried out by troops of 232 Battalion (Tactical) of Sector 4 Operation Hadin Kai.
He said 14 blocks of cannabis sativa valued at over ₦1 million and 43.9 grams of “ice” valued at over ₦3 million were seized from him as well as two Army camouflage T-shirts he always wore while taking the illicit drugs to the terrorists.
He assured that the suspect would be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and action.
The military had in the past, raised alarm over the impact of illicit drugs in the protracted terrorist activities in the northeast. It maintained supplies and circulation of narcotics, cannabis and other psychoactive substances or stimulants are drivers of the violence in the area and around the Lake Chad region.
